Your sources.list I assume is setup for stable. An upgrade in this case would only upgrade your stable disb. I want to stay within Debian > packages, and ideally where possible the Official release. ping is in base. :) When you need something, Debian lets you easily install it. Off the top of my head, I think the first things I generally install on a base install is vim and screen.
