You shouldn't be using unstable unless you know what you are doing. Use aptitude. Or at the VERY least use: apt-get -u dist-upgrade Your error seems that you are obviously missing the kernel pcmcia modules. That's easy. Unstable can have some more difficult problems. Again, you should NOT COMPILE your own kernel. There are lots and lots of kernel packages in debian. apt-cache search pcmcia A dist-upgrade should not have removed any packages, unless perhaps you ignored some kernel upgrade warnings. BESIDES you should have more than one kernel install at any one time.
