Can any guru help please:
I have just assembled a box out of odds. Good AT board with TX power supply, AGP ATI Rage pro Card, and a trusted HDD that I've been using on my Linux box until a couple of days ago.
As the box is to be used by someone merely for e-mailing and bashing out the odd letter I Installed Win98SE. It installed O.K. and powered down happily. However, I decided to install Linux instead.
I have tried various flavours of SuSE and Mandrake and both installed and configured happil.y but the box won't power down. The system hangs at the point the power is normally switched off and I get the following:
CPU: 0 EIP: Not tainted Bad EIP value.
TIA

A lot of old boxes have bioses where the 32bit power down function Linux normally uses is buggy. Building a kernel with the apm real mode power down option might work better.
