Cheers, that did the trick!  Well, it did after wrestling with floppy disks to 
get the bloody file over...

I've got the network running, I'm now trying to configure internet connection 
sharing on my desktop (Mandrake) box through my modem.  I've put 
"net.ipv4.ip_forward=1" in /etc/sysctl.conf and done a "echo 1 > 
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward", then typed:

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE

But "iptables -L" still doesn't list any rules :-(  How come?
