hdc is usually the first disk on the second ATA channel. The /dev/cdrom link is created by the debian installer if it detects a cdrom. It also adds an fstab entry for /cdrom to mount it; $mount /cdrom .
| modconf offers 2 modules for my AC'97 card: "ac97" and "ac97_codec"; I tried both
the ac97 and ac97_codec module are used by drivers for sound chipsets that are ac97 based if I remeber correctly. The key is to select the driver for your hardware e.g. the driver for via on-board sound, which will in turn use the ac97 modules to setup your sound system.
| .... on my system a lot of silence; but when my soundcard doesn't work - - why I can hear CDs?? | gnome-sound-recorder crashed with an error message; looking in the Gnome-Bugzilla data base now I guess we are speaking about error 110738; but I haven't any idea what I should do now. How could I hear my .wav-files?
CD audio is outputted as an analog stream by the cdrom, this is then fed to the sound card via a small cable, the sound card can then either take an active role in its output by for instance applying a pre-amp or a passive role by just passing it the output jack(s) but the host OS,CPU etc aren't involved other then controlling the track, play, pause etc.
If you can, it might be easier to pick up a cheap PCI sound card as there are a lot of issues using ac97 based sound under linux; the major one is getting it working in the first place, another one is that many of the ac97 chipsets are fixed rate and unless you run everything that isn't at that rate thru resampling it'll come out too fast or slow.
