I think the question is "why do you care what format is used?".

If you are building a huge IMAP service, perhaps for commercial sale to
many thousands of users, using (or intending to use) multiple mail
servers, it may become an issue.

Interesting benchmark here;

Basically says it is software quality not underlying format that
dominates performance - oh so common a result.

I believe also if you insist on using qmail it may be easier to use
Courier IMAP server.
