There was a long discussion of this in the archive, partly because Redhat do it differently to everyone else. Have you read that? http://www.dclug.org.uk/ My Redhat box has "root_ok" line in /etc/pam.d/kppp I'd try zapping that (do back it up first), but IIRC the kppp executable is actually a wrapper, take a closer look. I don't kppp, but use the ifup/ifdown scripts, a bit fiddler to set up, but allows greater flexibility.
