There are two approaches to this -

1) ODBC : there are several ODBC drivers available for linux - MySQL have
a free OBDC implementation. Perl can use most ODBC drivers through
DBD::ODBC and DBI.

2) IBM stuff : IBM are heavily into Linux these days, they have a lot of
middleware and have ported much of it to linux. developerworks is a mine
of information and the AS400 documentation is very impressive.

also try the AS400 newsgroups (google is your friend).

AFAIK there are SNA and mq-series ports to Linux.
