[LUG] ip address

Hi. I've cheked man ip ehere it sugested looking for 
usr/share/dbc/iproute......................and looked for 
usr/share/dbc/iproute-2.4.7/ip-cref.ps which did'nt appear to exist, possibly 
due to my install selections.......but I'm none the wiser in working out what 
the ip address is of my computer. I've also tried pinging 
localhost(127.0.0.1) which replied with 127.0.0.1 repetedly and tried looking 
in etc/resolv.conf
  I need to know this as I'm trying to set up a LAN here at home.  I'm 
probably making this more difficult than it needs to be (as usual). Will 
someone help ?........
