I just checked and ntfs-tools is on Knoppix.  Than is what you need.
There are instructions on the web too - use Google.
According to linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net, these are the tools being
used on the latest Mandrake beta. I'll get this sometime over the
next couple of weeks and give it a shot. I'm also going to have a
play with Knoppix at some point.

Thanks for all the comments and advice.  I'll let the list know how I
get on in due course.
