How much do you know about .NET? the whole .net framework is a great idea, and actually works *very* well. It's interoperable (and truly is), very well documented, fast, and has a great IDE (vs.net). The only problem to hand is that it is closed source, something that is being resolved by mono, who are doing a great job at writting an open source version of the .net framework, and a rather funky c# compiler. C# itself is a very nice language, for those that like a nice simple language with the ease of vb, but the power of C++, without the worry of memory managment (good in *some* situations, not all by a long way). i've knocked up an application this week, in a metter of hours that would take me at least a few days with C++ and either MFC or QT, and then porting that application from MFC to QT (or vise versa) would have taken a couple more days. .net will be part of the future, like it or not. GNU and mono are both doign an ecellent job at providing open source alternatives, which i use, and like a lot. Just because somethign is from microsoft, it doesn't mean it's a bad idea. The only thing in my opinion that is wrogn with .net is that it's closed source. Don't get me wrong - i'm helping mono as much as i can to get a decent working .net from open source, so it's not like we're stuck to windows. A lot of our customers use VB, and we have to have windows servers because of this, sadly. The sooner people move to .net and there is a decent open source vb jit compiler so we can run the code under apache, the better. This is one of the few thigns in the web development world that is sticking people with microsoft. I've not really touched ASP.NEt that much, but i know a number of hard core open source PHP and perl users who have been most impressed by it. i'm using a very long spoon while using .net, but i think microsoft have made a major mess of thigns with .net, due to the fact in the very near future (and already to some extent now) applciations will be truly cross platform, and can easily use qt, gtk, or windows widgets, asp.net will be able to run on windows or linux. The most ironic thing is that microsfot have inadvertently solved a number of long lived problems, one being open source GUI problems. One application can be written, then use either the QT (kde) or GTK (gnome) widgets (and other knobs and buttons) with the flick of a button. Don't get me wrong, i've not become a microsoft whore, far from it. But .NEt truly rocks imho, and will almost certinaly play a big part of the future. It's alsready saved me about a weeks work, which is never a bad thing ;) If somethign is goign to play a part in the future, the more you know about it, the better - after all, we have to fight these thigns, and create a better version, but open source.
