It is possible, I upgraded from KDE2 to the early 3beta using RPM's from a
LinuxFormat DVD. Numerous false starts were needed as the core parts of KDE
are inter-dependent and need to be installed TOGETHER, i.e. all one the one
and same command line to rpm -i. That can get confusing. KDE3 then shows
itself when you login next. (Although it's a good idea to back up your ~/.kde
directory before installing the RPM's and logout as soon as the RPM's are
installed.)

I had numerous problems upgrading as so many config files had been re-designed
and I've since found it easier to wait for a distro to include the latest
version of KDE or Gnome. (It helps to buy a 60Gb second drive too, now I can
install 9 or more distros at a time and only use the ones that are easiest to
configure!

Currently installed: Mandrake 8.2, Suse 7.1, Lycoris, Slackware8, Debian3,
Mandrake9.
Soon to be installed: RedHat 7.2, possibly Sorcerer or Turbo.
Only ones in regular use: Slackware8 and Mandrake9.

Doing it from tarballs is not something I'd attempt.

BTW. This is my first email session using the UKFSN ISP as mentioned on the
list:

After months of struggling with Tiscali (sometimes taking >30 minutes to get
online!!!), I'm going to use UKFSN now for 0845 access, especially when
Tiscali are being obtuse.
