When you are running VNC is there any way in which the session can tell which terminal is in use? (This is quite simple with LTSP.) That way, instead of expecting the user to know which printer they should use, the computer can automatically select the appropriate one. Each VNC session, Connects onto an individual port, I guess if you were really clever you could use this. But if you fire up VNC through Xinetd then forget it, as Xinetd will allocate the next available port. <In a Nutshell> No. </In a Nutshell>
They have a unique MAC address - ergo a solution exists - although you'll have to record it with DHCP or get DHCPD to allocate IP addresses based on MAC address. I think Mark uses the later approach at St Peters, he said he only issues IP addresses to known MAC addresses. Some people view knowing the MAC addresses of devices as unneeded micromanagement, although in my experience with big ethernet networks it is vital to record mac addresses against devices. Of course if you firewall internally, or route, it is less of an issue. But with one big ethernet, when you start getting problems with layer 2 you better know what device has gone wonky or find out quickly.
