Hi Neil I'm still a relative Newbie so treat what I say with some caution. The rest of the LUG will soon tell you if I'm giving you wrong advice. ;-o It seems to me as if pam could have a problem resolving the ISPs different nameservers. First the obvious: You might check in the Kppp setup that you have DNS set to Automatic and IP set to Dynamic in pam's ISP account. If I remember correctly, after you have connected, examine each account in Kppp setup and you should see the nameserver numbers in the DNS box. When pam accesses Vispa she should get the same numbers as when neil accesses Vispa. Secondly: Check the contents of /etc/ppp/resolv.conf both before and after pam and neil have accessed Vispa. If pam gets different results from neil then pam probably has permission problems. If this is the case then open a terminal and type:- cd /etc/ppp ls -l If one of the lines looks like:- -rw-r--r-- root root resolve.conf create a group called dialout, add neil and pam to it and change the Group of resolve.conf to dialout. Henceforth both neil and pam allow the system to modify resolv.conf. When Kppp starts for the very first time it creates a resolv.conf if one doesn't exist and gives it root permissions. With more than one ISP this could cause user problems. So it's advisable to have a modem user group like dialout. An aside. IMHO wvdial is superior to Kppp and takes most of the pain out of establishing an ISP connection. I can't remember when I last used Kppp. Keith -- SuSE 8.0 Linux on 700Mhz AMD Duron/PCChips 810LMR with 128MB RAM and 20GB Maxtor HD using KDE's Kmail On Wednesday 30 October 2002 10:56 am, Neil Winchurst wrote:
This is a follow up to my problems with more details. I am using Mandrake 8.2 and Mozilla. There are two users, user neil and user pam. In Bristol we were with ISP blueyonder (Telewest). We now live in Holsworthy. Blueyonder is due to be switched off next week so we have set up two new ones namely Force9 and Vispa. However we must have done something wrong, see below, which is why we are seeking some help. Blueyonder still works fine for us both, no problems. Vispa was set up by user pam. Force9 was set up by user neil. Both Vispa and Force9 work fine for user neil, no problems at all. User pam can log in to both Vispa and Force9 and in both cases the modem light comes on to show that it is working. User pam can also start Mozilla with no problem (it starts with a blank page). However if she tries to access a web site she is told that it cannot be found. (We also have Opera set up and the same thing happens with that so I do not see that it has anything to do with the browser.) User pam can also not send or receive emails, presumably because the computer cannot access the internet. Yes we do use kppp to log on. I cannot understand why blueyonder works fine for us both while the other two work for me only. Can anyone help or suggest where I should look? TIA Neil
