Mine is a Latitude, and runs pretty reliably.  SuSE 7.2

For large customers Dell propose to do this again, or at least sned the 
systems out with a floppy of FreeDos in the packaging to comply with MS' 
money off requirement they ship none without OS.

Probably the logical choice is Red Hat, given their history with Dell.
