I think there are probs with fujisu drives, not sure though, this prob sounds familar though Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jon Lawrence" <jon@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, September 30, 2002 4:40 PM Subject: Re: [LUG] Fujitsu 20G Hard DrivesHi, A lot of hard drives come with a 3 year manufacturing warranty. So although you whole machine may be out of warranty, it could be that your hard drive isn't. It's worth speaking with the machine manufacturers and seeing if you can pursuade them. The 1st was replaced under warranty but after a few months it also went down. By this time the whole machine was out of warranty so I replaced the drive with a Maxtor (excellent drive). As I'm loath to throw anything away I retained the faulty drive. When the fiasco blew up I contacted Fujitsu. But, although the drive has the same faulty chipset and exhibits all the reported symptoms, they would'nt replace it because they only do replacements under a distribution warranty. So I'm out in the cold! My machine manufacturer can do nothing because I'm out of warranty and Fujitsu will do nothing because they will only deal with the manufacturer of the machine. To cut the story short as I am not the original purchaser of the drive I have recourse to no one. Happy days! Keith
As I understand it there are 2 problems with some Fujitsu drives: (a) MPG3102/3204AT 10/20G drives dated before 2001-02. have a Servo Timing error which can be fixed with a Flash Firmware Upgrade. (b) Those with a Cirrus Logic controller chip (CL-SH8671-450E-A3) which can't be easily fixed. (My drive) Keith
