I bought and read ``Programming PHP'' by Rasmus Lerdorf and was able to sort it out without any issues. I therefore recommend this publication.
Syntactically, it shares the common elements of all popular scripting languages. Someone with elementary C would pick it up in about half an hour. Database integration is a breeze, a few other nice treats in there.
