I was thinkign about this a while back, however, there are so many different ways of setting up connections in linux depending on the dist+version, it would be a nightm, are to create a cd that you could just stick into your linux box and it's sets it all up automagically like in windows (though most butcher the system). So maybe what we need is a defined format like .ins's that ISP's sometimes provide for windows, so that connecting really could just be a matter of installgn a file. this would make life a lot easier for a lot of users, especially when you sometimes need to change different settings for different ISP's at times. hmm, thinking about it ppp is pretty standard over all linux boxes, maybe a script that finds the location, asks the user if it's ok to install the file (making sure it doesn't overwrite somwething) wouldn't be that hard. The thing i don't know about is how things like kppp and other graphical connection managers work... do they still use ppp's default config files? what may be an even better idea is a perl script the user downloads and runs. while i would be against in one way as you'd have to run it as root, at least it's open source so users can see what it's doing. the other thign is INS can also create mail accounts for you - though I don't think i'd want any ISP's script or file doing this on my desktop (evedn if it was possible - there are so may clients it would be near impossible) most mail client's don't support an easy way of automagically adding an acocunt. maybe i'll have another play sometime soon(ish) for setting up connections for users. ~ Theo - -- Theo Zourzouvillys http://zozo.org.uk/ Are you making all this up as you go along? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE9O101448CrwpTn6YRApa3AKC0JNKGdUuwySxJQyk2sJWqZXxf6ACdG4+z jY1ZXwYVaM1p/iWJDTCrN2A= =K27R -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
