Something like....

NAME=$DIR/`date +%H%M`suffix

info date - for other format modifiers

US Military format i.e. YYYYMMDDHHMM has much to recommend it as
numerical order and date order coincide, as does say ignoring
daylight saving (Think what may happen when the clocks go
backward).
