David is right.  I have an account with Uklinux and I have to issue:

$ ftp
> open

 [...]

> accountname.uklinux.net

 [...]

> password

> ...

Not sure why this is.  It is also true that you have to be dialled in 
before you can proceed *unless* you upgrade your membership to 
`Silver' (which is, I reckon, thirty quid)
