If you dont have scsi support in your kernel then that 
would be a problem !!! check what modules you have loaded. 
What distro are you using ? and what kernel ? As regards to 
the mount command it should look something like:
mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/usb
with spaces between /dev/sda and /mnt/usb. I will send you 
the line from my fstab if you think it would help you ??
