Hello, A problem I had last week was with a redhat 7.1 server. Having installed the OS, added other rpms, changed configs (mail, ntp, xinetd, etc) and the like. I also installed the 2.4.7 (I think) kernel rpms from redhat updates. I then tried to reboot the system. It failed saying that the root file system wasn't mounted, unable to mount the root file system from '4805' (which it turns out it got from the map file), and then paniced (no oops though). Since the system booted at all, the boot partition and boot sector were obviously okay. Using a rh72 administrators disk (apparently you get this if you buy the boxed sets), we could mount the partition. I could see all the files, modify them, etc. I could see nothing wrong. I reloaded lilo, tried installing the original (2.4.2) kernel rpms and still got nothing. e2fsck showed nothing. The system still wouldn't boot. The map file itself looked aokay (binary stuff, but the relevant boot options were visible and so the file itself didn't seem to be corrupted). The problem is somewhat academic now since I had lost time on trying to sort this out. It was decided to simply start from scratch and use rh7.2. The system is currently being rebuilt. However, I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas as to what I could have tried to get the thing going? The server is a Compaq DL360, with a single scsi disk (using compaq smart array).
