Who is the target audience?
Local businesses and organisations who use software. Although we will have a lot of converts who just want to know what is happening, or become better open source developers. Quite a lot of people expressed an interested in becoming an Open Source developer, or wanting advice on using CVS, building open source software, but I haven't got a speaker for that yet. So far we have volunteers for... presentations of; Open Source use at an ISP - from Theo Developments in Open Source Healthcare - from our resident Doctor Linux terminal servers (Using old PC's as terminals this time) - from Malcolm at Redhat Demonstrations of; Valeting your website - from Nick I might do Eighth Layers use of Open Source software if nothing more interesting comes along. I might do Freenet if people want to know about that..... I'd love some more database stuff, Theo may cover MySQL, but a good PostgreSQL presentation would be nice - I know someone at SWLUG who may be persuaded if no one else owns up to running PostgreSQL. We should have a Perl guru to explain CPAN and the PERL world view to us. I want someone who uses SourceForge to explain how it is used to support projects. Idealy someone who uses it for more than a Website and CVS repository like urm GNU chess. We need more demonstrations. Some people want an overview of what Open Source software is out there.... but that is kind of a big topic. Ideas welcome on that one. Someone who knows a bit about software licensing could cover that as well - you know who you are!!!!! We have some other volunteers, but I don't have topics for them yet. I'm very happy for people who want to just do a few minutes on a topic - if it conveys a relevant point or two - opens peoples minds. For instance I don't think we need 20 minutes on software licenses - but a few minutes explaining the key aspects might be useful - free of cost, free, open source, etc. Something like OpenSSH might make a good 5 minute presentation and save the CVS speaker explaining what OpenSSH is.... -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
