[LUG] PATH

I am trying to install a c++ compiler to make object files from pcformat 
disc. The compilers say I must put their name in the PATH variable via 
.profile. I remember this fron XENIX but I cannot  find .profile in Mandrake 
8.0 nbor anything about PATH. Help please.
