Re: [LUG] Just Curious? - and an apology RE rants about debian
notice for any debian stable users - though i'm sure everyone else
already figured this out...
my setup -
machine 1 (stella) - debian stable:
P200 based box as firewall, gateway, proxy server, appletalk file/print
server, NFS server. girlfriend controls internet conection using vnc
and diald x control.
machine 2 (skol) debian stable with compiled from source progs as necessary:
workstation based on 800 duron and 128 MB ram - which was not being
used. ........
i was checking out the issue of adding ram to my workstation cos it
seemed to be slow - and - it transpires (thanks be for the oracle
deja.com) that the install prog for debian stable does not set the
amount of RAM in lilo.conf - and if you have more than 64 MB ram you
have to tell lilo otherwise it uses a default setting - i would guess
about 16 MB.
the result was that my machine was only using a small amount of the
128MB ram available and was very slow - but i thought - well java progs
are slow - and i'm using the latest versions of mozilla... (and too dumb
to think of other reasons...)
now i have told the kernel about the correct amount of ram - by typing
Linux mem=128mb
at the boot prompt and the machine flies along - before, the hard drive
was repeatedly being thrashed - now it is silent most of the time,
i've heard that there are ways of checking how much virtual memory being
used - anyone know how?
and how do you measure bogomips - and what are they?
