Hiya Peter! Paul S has been dead helpful, and I think I might have a crack at zipslack to kick off with. Although an easy install would definitely be a HUGE +!!! Ultimately (if I get on okay with linux) I'll be looking to get a modern computer (!) and just have a linux OS (ie no MS). So far I've heard good things about Red Hat, SuSE , Caldera, Mandrake (and to a lesser extent Debian). But as Paul suggests the best thing I could do is to (get a better computer - or at least free a ton of space on mine!) and try a few to see which flavour I like best. My somewhat ancient system specs I've just posted to the list. What do u think 2 a linux 'trial' from a bootable CD. Is that a possibility? Thanks a lot 4 your help, best wishes roly t. -----Original Message----- From: Peter Hatton [mailto:bramley@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 09 September 2001 21:23 To: Roland Tarver Subject: RE: linux newbie Ello again, I see you are getting stuck into the list! I think Paul Sutton on the lug list, answered your question. 170mb is small. The smallest system I installed Linux on was a 486 with 400megs. Mandrake I find a good linux dist to install. Nice easy install. However, it does need a Pentium class CPU or better to run on. (And more hard disc space) Failing that, you could try Redhat, but you will have to cut out a lot of the packages to get it onto your hard disc. What spec is your CPU and how much memory?
