[LUG] incorrect login

Help required.
When starting Caldera Open Linux on my aging laptop I
suddenly am greeted by "incorrect login", even as
"root".
Single user login can be achieved but using adduser
seems ineffective. Mandraske 8.0 is running on my
desktop machine and I tried copying  /etc/passwd from
that without success. I'm very much a newbie and have
exhausted the RTFM method. As usual any help would be
much appreciated.
