Does it happen if they start /bin/sh (usually a symlink to /bin/bash)?
[alex at moe alex]$ ls -l `which sh`
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Nov 27 14:40 /bin/sh -> bash*
>From memory, running bash from /bin/sh like that puts it into some sort of
bourne shell compatibility mode. Maybe this will fix it?
